ST. THOMAS - A man and woman were shot to death during an early morning fight Monday at a Coki Point beach bar on St. Thomas.
Akilah Godet, 35, and Jumore Lewis, 20, were shot to death just after 2 a.m. Monday, according to V.I. Police spokeswoman Melody Rames.
A 23-year-old man from the British Virgin Islands also was shot in the leg and was taken to Schneider Hospital, according to police.
He was treated and released from the hospital, Rames said. Godet was taken to the hospital by emergency responders and Lewis by a private vehicle, Rames said.
According to police, a large group of people gathered at the bar. Several of the people got into a fight, and one or more of the people fired shots, police said.
Godet sustained at least one shot to her upper body, according to Rames. Rames did not specify what part of Godet's upper body sustained the wound.
Lewis sustained several shots to his upper body, though what parts of his upper body also were not specified.
Police are investigating the incident.
However, during the afternoon Monday there was little evidence that a shooting had taken place just hours earlier, and tourists at the beach were unaware that a shooting had taken place.
Locals, on the other hand, spoke of the incident among themselves, though none of them wanted to speak publicly about it.
However, several people said that it was an incident that could have been prevented had police been patrolling the area more frequently.
When asked how long the police took to arrive at the scene of the crime, Rames said that police were there within four minutes of the first 911 call that the dispatch center received.
The only physical evidence that a murder took place was the faint blood stain on the pavement, still wet from the blood having been washed away.
