ST. CROIX - The V.I. National Guard Joint Forces Cycling team will host a road race Sunday at Fort Frederick in Frederiksted.

The seventh annual Angel Encarnacion Road Race will take place from 7 to 10 a.m. Sunday and will begin at Fort Frederick and head south through the town of Frederiksted and on to Queen Mary Highway, according to a statement issued Wednesday. The race will continue by turning onto Concordia Road and traveling north through La Grange and back to Fort Frederick.

Each lap is 4.5 miles, and the race distances are 18 miles, 36 miles and 54 miles. Participants will complete the number of laps that will equal the total number of miles for which they qualified.

The V.I. National Guard Joint Forces Cycling Team is part of the V.I. Cycling Federation. Both groups have been working together to sponsor four bike races on an annual basis.

Organizers said the race is not restricted to any particular group of cyclists, and all persons who are interested are encouraged to be a part of the event.

"We're inviting all cyclists to come out and support this event, whether you compete regularly or not," said Chief Warrant Officer Mervin Mills, captain of the Joint Forces Cycling Team. "You can complete a controlled lap with an escort."

Members of the V.I. National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion also will be in attendance with promotional items and refreshments.

For more information, contact Mills at 712-7931, or Bevern Sage, co-captain of the team at 332-6282.
