ST. THOMAS - Tatjana McPartland went into labor in 2013, but it was not until the new year that she gave birth to her first child.

After 30 hours of labor, McPartland gave birth to the first and only baby born on St. Thomas on the first day of 2014 on Wednesday. McPartland's daughter, Olivia May McPartland, was born at 11:51 a.m., weighing in at 8 pounds and 5 ounces and measuring in at 20.5 inches in length.

She and her husband, Bill McPartland, were exhausted but elated.

"Hopefully she brings a lot of luck to the new year," Bill McPartland said while holding his newborn daughter at Schneider Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

At Schneider, two babies were born on the last day of 2013, Tuesday, and only Olivia McPartland was born Wednesday as of press time.

"I'm sure she's going to bring lots of giggles and lots of 'aww' moments," said Tatjana McPartland. "She's absolutely perfect."

Meanwhile, on St. Croix, another couple welcomed their own daughter, Amaia Aurora Cabrera, into the world.

Cabrera was both St. Croix's first-born of the year, and the territory's first-born of the new year, as she was born at 2:44 a.m. Wednesday.

Cabrera's parents, Laura Valdez and Maria Cabrera, originally from the Dominican Republic, according to Juan Luis Hospital officials, speak little English so they declined to speak with The Daily News on Wednesday.

Still, they welcomed a showering of gifts and were thankful for the compassion and prayers for their baby girl, who was born prematurely and was in stable condition Wednesday afternoon.

"Last I heard, the baby was doing fine," said Samuel Baptiste, special assistant to the chief executive officer of the hospital.

Amaia did not have a recorded weight by Wednesday evening, according to Donna Lockhart, certified nurse midwife at Luis Hospital, though Cabrera was 10 inches in length.

At Luis Hospital, two other babies were born on Wednesday, and one was born just before the new year, on Tuesday.
