ST. CROIX - Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, arrived on St. Croix on Friday and are scheduled to be on-island until New Year's Day.
Social media was abuzz on Friday afternoon with news of the visit, claims of sightings of the vice presidential motorcade and comments extending warm Crucian welcomes to the Bidens.
A beefed-up police presence was obvious Friday afternoon along some of the island's major roadways. It was not clear, though, whether a helicopter buzzing around overhead had anything to do with the vice president's visit.
Government House spokesman Jean Greaux Jr. said he had received notification Thursday evening from the White House press office about the Bidens' vacation.
"This is strictly rest and relaxation," Greaux said. "There are no public events scheduled."
This is not the Bidens' first visit to St. Croix.
They have quietly visited the territory around holiday time more than once in recent years, initially on Water Island and, more recently, on St. Croix.
There are no plans for any meetings between Biden and local officials, according to Greaux.
The Bidens are scheduled to be on-island through Wednesday, he said.
