WAPA begins Main Street road work

Daily News photo by AMANDA NORRIS A crew hired by V. I. Water and Power Authority begins excavating Saturday in front of the Lugo Post Office in downtown Charlotte Amalie as part of a four-month project in the Main Street shopping district.
ST. THOMAS - A V.I. Water and Power Authority crew dug a small test pit in front of the Alvaro de Lugo Sr. Post Office on Saturday as the first step in laying underground cables for delivering electricity to the shopping district.
The test pit will allow archaeologists to see whether the planned Downtown Hazard Mitigation Project will destroy valuable artifacts that could be buried in the historic district.
