ST. THOMAS - Police identified 31-year-old Onasis Vanterpool as the man who died March 1 when his Commandant Gade home caught fire. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

An autopsy confirmed that Vanterpool, who was confined to a wheelchair, died from smoke inhalation, according to V.I. Police spokeswoman Melody Rames.

Vanterpool had been paralyzed from the waist down after being shot in the neck in August 2001. Someone shot at him and a 16-year-old boy as they drove through the Savan.
