ST. CROIX - Police are investigating a shooting just before 7 p.m. Tuesday that left one man dead and at least one other injured by gunfire.

Residents in the William's Delight housing community and surrounding area reported hearing a volley of gunshots - lasting for about a minute - from high-powered weapons ring out. They said police responded quickly and sirens could be heard blaring as the gunfire continued.

Heavily armed police officers responded and saturated the community, and minutes later, St. Croix Police Chief James Parris confirmed that a shooting had taken place in the housing community and that there had been two individuals injured by gunfire - one seriously and another person who had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

He said because the incident had just occurred, he did not have any additional information that could be released.

Later Tuesday evening, V.I. Police spokeswoman Melody Rames confirmed reports that one of the gunshot victims had died, but said she would have any additional information until the preliminary reports are completed.

Tuesday's murder was the second in the district and the fourth in the territory, with one murder on St. Thomas and one on St. John.

Rames said the name of the deceased shooting victim and any other information about the incident will be released later.

According to the V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency web blotter - a list of calls to 911 - emergency dispatchers received a weapons call in William's Delight's public housing area at 6:48 p.m. Tuesday. Three minutes later, at 6:51 p.m., there was another call from William's Delight, this time, someone reporting that there was a gunshot victim.

According to the log, there was then another call reporting weapons at 6:53 p.m. from Lorraine Village housing community, but it is not known whether that call was connected to the William's Delight shooting.
