ST. THOMAS - A $2 million winning Powerball ticket was sold on St. Thomas, although the winner has not yet come forward to claim the prize.
It is the first time a prize of this magnitude has been won in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
V.I. Lottery chief of staff Kevermay Douglas said Saturday's Powerball drawing had 216 Virgin Islands winners, although most were for smaller amounts.
"We can confirm happily that we did have a $2 million Powerball winner from the U.S. Virgin Islands," Douglas said. "We don't have confirmation of the exact location, but we do know that the ticket was sold here in St. Thomas."
The largest prize claimed in the territory before Saturday's drawing was a $750,000 Mega Millions jackpot claimed last year, Douglas said.
Saturday's winning ticket holder got a "Match 5," which means they got all the numbers on the ticket except the Powerball number.
Douglas said that there is a limited time for the winner to claim their prize, but it could take a few weeks for someone to realize they have won.
"Sometimes people don't want everyone to know right away, so they wait for the excitement to die down a bit before they come in," she said.
Powerball in the territory is run by Caribbean Lottery, which is contracted by the V.I. Lottery to administer the game.
"We just want to encourage everyone to keep buying Powerball and Mega Millions. When they do, everybody wins, because we give money back to the General Fund and to other special funds," Douglas said.
