ST. CROIX - A 24-year-old man remains jailed after being arrested on charges that he had sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl during the last few weeks.

Basil Davis was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree aggravated rape and first-degree unlawful sexual contact after the girl's mother reported that the two had been intimately seeing each other.

According to the probable cause fact sheet filed in V.I. Superior Court, a woman contacted police on Tuesday, reporting that her teenage daughter had been having sex with a man who was more than 10 years older than she is.

The woman told police that she noticed some changes in the girl's behavior patterns and decided to do a random check of her social media accounts to see whether she noticed anything significant going on.

When the mother checked, she looked at the girl's in-box messages on her Facebook account and saw a message from Davis, saying that he wanted to see her, according to court documents.

The woman told police she confronted the girl and asked her about her contact with Davis, and the girl admitted at that time that she had been having sex with him at their home, beginning some time last month.

The girl told police that she met Davis on the Internet, and they exchanged numbers after some time. She said Davis told her that he wanted to meet her, and she gave him directions to her house. The girl told police that they talked outside for a while, but the sun was hot, so they went inside the house and talked some more then watched a movie, according to court documents.

The girl said Davis made sexual advances that she did not resist, but was unsuccessful in having intercourse; however, she said they had sex on three other occasions when he came to her home.

Under local law, no one younger than 18 can consent to having sexual intercourse.

According to the police report, the girl only knew Davis by his nickname, but police were able to find him and took him in for questioning.

Police said when Davis was interviewed, his statement corroborated the girl's story about how they met, and his statement to police about their sexual contact matched hers.

He subsequently was arrested and bail was set at $75,000.

Davis was advised of his rights and remains jailed at Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility, unable to meet his release conditions.
