Woman walking with grandson killed in Christiansted hit-and-run

A woman walking along North Shore Road in Christiansted with her 4-year-old grandchild was killed in a hit-and-run collision early Sunday, police said.
According to police spokeswoman Melody Rames, the woman was walking about 5 a.m. just west of the District Court when she was struck by a black, or dark colored, Suzuki Vitara, Grand Vitara or Sidekick.
The vehicle did not stop and the woman died at the scene, according to police.
The young boy was brought to a police station by a concerned citizen, according to a release.
According to the statement, the Suzuki will have front end damage and the department is asking all body shops and car repair businesses on St. Croix to call police immediately upon seeing a vehicle fitting this description. Police are also asking any witnesses to the incident to contact them.
This case is being followed up by the Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Traffic Investigation Unit.
As of Sunday evening, police were not releasing the identity of the woman.
