Aubrey Issac

Aubrey Issac was born Jan. 18, 1926, to Mira Isaac on St. Kitts, and he is fondly known to his many friends as Superman.

Superman immigrated to St. Thomas about 50 years ago and worked with Merchants Market for 45 of those years. His friend and boss Isabel Amengual nicknamed him Superman because of his superior strength.

Although Superman did not have next of kin, he left behind many friends: Isabel Amengual, Terry and Maria Collier, Julius Felix, Germaine Todman, Royston Johnson, Carl Laplace, Bernice Frazer, Stella Felix, Ralph Aloi, Renea Lesley, Hilroy Hastings, Judy Grogan and Geoffrey Robinson.

Superman died doing what he loved most - swimming.

Isabel taught him to swim at Brewers Bay, and he continued swimming three days a week for the next 50 years. Even after he retired, he never left the Merchants family, choosing to live on the hill above the St. Thomas warehouse. His joy of life and sense of humor is captured in a photo of him driving his big Lincoln Town Car, with his namesake in the passenger seat. Goodby old friend.

A viewing will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Davis Funeral Home Chapel. Superman will be cremated and his ashes scattered at sea.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home.
