Services will be held Friday for Dr. Aubrey Roebuck, who died on Aug. 8, 2011.
The first viewing will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Turnbull's Funeral Home. The second viewing will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Frederick Lutheran Church followed by services at noon. Burial will be in Western Cemetery No. 1.
Roebuck was born on St. Thomas on Jan. 29, 1937. He contributed 32 years to the people of the Virgin Islands in the field of education. He graduated from Charlotte Amalie High School in 1954. He also received his bachelor's degree from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) and his master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees from Colorado State University.
In 1958 he began his teaching and administrative career as an Industrial Arts Teacher at Charlotte Amalie High School. He also received his electrical license and was appointed electrical instructor at Charlotte Amalie High School, a post be held until 1975. During his tenure as a teacher, he was vice president of the St. Thomas-St. John Federation of Teachers. Roebuck was also honored by the CAHS Class of 1965, and was named Teacher of the Year for the 1974-1975 school years.
In 1987, he was appointed Assistant Commissioner of Education and in 1990 he was an honoree at the Silver Anniversary of the Class of 1965.
He was an adjunct faculty member at the University of the Virgin Islands. After 32 years of dedicated government service, Roebuck, the assistant commissioner of Education was honored at a retirement benefit dinner on March 10, 1991.
He is survived by wife, Edna Roebuck; sons, Bernard, Leander and Shawn; adopted son, Michael James; brothers, Ector Roebuck, Jr. and Bernard Roebuck; sisters, Elaine C. Francis and Bernice R. Rhymer; mother-in-law, Eulalie Mahoney; brothers-in-law, Roy Joma and Danet Mahoney, James Rhymer Jr., Noel Boynes, Bernard Francis and Halvor Vanheyningen; sisters-in-law, Bernice Boynes, Sylvia Ross, Betty Mahoney, Jenice Vanheyningen, Kayo Roebuck, Antionette Roebuck and Pierina J. Roebuck; daughters-in-law, Melanie Bonelli Roebuck and Yenetta "Lucky" Roebuck; aunts, Ethlyn Huyghes and Olivia Ruan; uncles, Liston and Junior Schlesinger; grandchildren, Neiko, Chante, Kashawn, Quinten, Lea, Jaden, Shawn Jr. and Ashley; many nieces and nephews too numerous to mention; and special friends, Dr. Bert Petersen, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph King, Dr. Arthur Petersen, Viola E. Smith, Loretta Lloyd, Wilbur and Elmira Smith, Fitzgerald and Eva Rowe, Dion Parson, Barbara and Candia Petersen, Stephen Thompson, Clinton Charleswell, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Pole, Mrs. Ingrid Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Canton, Cherry and Judy Gomez, Mr. and Mrs. John Rogers.
Roebuck was preceded in death by his son Aubrey Jr. and daughter Kim.
