Shortly after her arrival on St. Thomas in 1981, Carolyn joined the staff of the Mental Health Division as an adult and adolescent outpatient crisis intervention counselor. She provided diagnostic assessment, crisis intervention and counseling to individuals, couples and families, within a broad range of diagnostic categories including major mental illnesses, depression, addiction and learning disabilities. She served as liaison to all work done within the school systems and was instrumental in developing treatment for adolescent programs. She brought academic brilliance, a creative mind and a compassionate heart to her work and she was greatly loved by her clients and her co-workers.
Two years later, Carolyn took her counseling skills and became one of the "original four" staff of the Youth Multi Service Center, an alternative program for school drop outs, as their counselor. Carolyn later became the executive director.
On June 16, 1985, Carolyn became the proud mother of a son, Jarryd, who she adored.
A longtime employee of the University of the Virgin Islands, Carolyn served as the director of enrollment management from 1999 through 2006. Prior to that time, she was associate director of admissions and director of student support services. She also served as a counselor in the Upward Bound program during the 1980s. Carolyn contributed much to this institution through her constant commitment to students particularly in the Freshman Development Program and enrollment management. She touched the lives of many of our now graduates of this institution. Her ever vigilant concern and eagerness to communicate with all will be remembered.
In 1990, Carolyn was recruited into politics as the campaign manager and chief of staff to former Sen. Stephanie Scott-Williams. Having had a dose of Virgin Islands politics, Carolyn returned to UVI.
Carolyn's love of the Virgin Islands and the people are reflected by the hundreds of lives she touched through her many contributions. A contributing writer for a local tabloid, host for a UVI radio program and hostess at the Harbor View Restaurant were just a few of the roles Carolyn played.
On Tuesday, June 19, 2012, Carolyn gracefully accepted the hand of her Lord and peacefully departed this realm.
Celebration of life services for Carolyn R. Cook Roberts were held June 26, 2012, at New Macedonia Baptist Church in Riverdale, Ga.
To continue to celebrate her life, Carolyn leaves her husband, Arthur; son, Jarryd; parents, Alberta and John; sister, Linda; nephew, Kallid; niece, Tiffany; aunts and a host of friends and her entire Virgin Islands family.
Family, friends and associates will gather for a "life's celebration" for Carolyn at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lindqvist Beach.
