Ursula Bronisch Garfield
A memorial celebration will be on Sunday for Ursula B. Garfield, 78, who died in the early morning hours of Nov. 6, 2011, after a long battle with cancer
The memorial will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at the St. Thomas Yacht Club, Estate Nazareth, 775 6320.
In lieu of flowers, send donations to the Junior Tennis Program at the St. Thomas Yacht Club, Attention Helga Hosie.
Ursula was born in 1933 in Berlin, Germany, where her father, Dr. Gotthilf Bronisch, a lawyer, was the aide to the mayor of Berlin. As Hitler rose to power, Dr. Bronisch, who was part of the German resistance and confidante of Goerdeler, decided to emigrate to the United States. In 1936, he left Germany with his wife, Lisolette Elizabeth Lindeck Bronisch, of a prominent Jewish family from Mannheim, and 3-year-old Ursula, and moved to New York, where he worked in shipping and marketing for many years.
Ursula grew up as an only child in New York and Vermont. Ursula graduated from the Brearley School in New York City in 1951. She then attended Mary Washington College. She worked in advertising in New York City for many years at the firm of BBD&O. In 1974, she married well-known architect John R. Garfield and moved to St. Thomas. She worked side-by-side with her husband at John Garfield and Associates Architectural Firm until his retirement in 2008. He preceded her in death earlier this year,
The couple were active sailors, competing in many races throughout the Caribbean. They were members of the St. Thomas Yacht Club for more than 40 years. Ursula also loved to play tennis and held the position of chairperson for Tennis at the Yacht Club for a number of years. She was an active member of the Inner Wheel of St. Thomas.
She is survived by her stepchildren (John R. Garfield's children), Robin Garfield Cosby, Jonathan Townsend Garfield and Alison Garfield Himmelberg their families and by many friends on St. Thomas and in the U.S. mainland.
