Ambassadors pound Oilers in Vialet softball playoffs

ST. THOMAS — Ernest Joseph hit a grand slam in the second inning and Christian Harley added a two-run shot in the first to lead the Ambassadors to a 16-6 victory over the Oilers in a Susthens Vialet Coed Modified-pitch Softball League playoff game Sunday.
The Ambassadors swept the best-of-five series, 3-0, and will meet the Movements in the league championship series, which starts Sunday with a doubleheader at Emile Griffith Ballpark.
Jose Rodriguez, the winning pitcher, and Alfred Maduro combined for four hits for the Ambassadors while Ernest Joseph went 2-for-4 with six RBIs.
Frank Thomas had three hits in four plate appearances to lead the Oilers, who held a 3-2 lead after the first inning but never rallied back from the Ambassadors’ seven-run second inning.
Movements 13, Brothers 1
Felix Pigan and Johnny Weekes each crushed 3-run home runs in the sixth inning as the Movements rolled to a 13-1 win over the Brothers in a playoff game Sunday.
The Movements swept the best-of-five series, 3-0.
Pitcher Cyril Battiste threw a one-hitter for the Movements, who scored 11 runs in the sixth and never looked back. Ramil Bahul hit a solo home run in the fifth and went 3-for-3 from the plate for the Movements. Weekes, Felix Peneda, Ricardo Eliasa and Victor Portes contributed two hits, apiece.
Reggie Wilkinson had the lone hit for the Brothers.
Unique wins Soccerama Tourney
On St. Croix, the St. Croix Region of the USVI Soccer Association began the 2010-2011 season with the traditional soccerama at Owen Schjang Ballpark on Sunday. The defending league champions Unique defeated the USVI Under-20 squad, 5-4, on penalty kicks to clinch the tournament title.
Six teams participated in the knockout tournament, which consisted of 30-minute games. The Under-20 squad earned its way to the finals by defeating the Skills, 1-0, and Chelsea, 4-3, on penalty kicks. Unique, on the other hand, defeated the Helenites, 2-0, and earned a bye to the finals.
Prankton was eliminated, 2-0, by Chelsea. The regular season is scheduled to begin next week.
