HP&R, Hospital earn wins in ABA hoops playoffs

ST. THOMAS - Tiba Francis scored 28 points and 12 rebounds as HP&R defeated Education, 77-72, in overtime of Game 1 of their ABA Governmental and Industrial Coed Basketball League playoff series Thursday at Kean High's Digna Marie Wheatley Gym.
Jahleel Lakes led HP&R with a game-high 32 points, while Milliner Rogers added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Education was led by Jamari Maduro with 31 points and eight rebounds. He was followed by Kyle Lamotta with 12 points and Rasheem Richards with 11. Lloyd Jackson added 13 rebounds.
In the second game of the night, Hospital defeated Police, 60-51, in their playoff series opener. Steve Gardner II led Hospital with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Brian Mills Jr. with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Police's top scorer was Bernard Douglas with 12 points. Derick Greaves and Antonio Matthew each added nine points.
The second game of each series is tonight starting at 7 p.m. with Police vs. Hospital, followed by HP&R vs. Education.
