Christmas Basketball Tournament

ST. CROIX - The V.I. Sports, Parks and Recreation Department will conduct a basketball tournament at Central High's Ronald Charles Arena today through Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. each day. There will be a total of 23 teams in the tournament, including 10 in the 10-12 division, eight in the 13-15 and five in the 16-18.

The tournament was originally scheduled to take place Thanksgiving Weekend.

Kwanzaa Run on St. Thomas

ST. THOMAS - The St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners concludes its 2012 race calendar with the Kwanzaa Run and Walk at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. There will be a 4.3-mile run, a 2-mile walk and a 2-mile run.

Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m. All events start promptly at 4:30 p.m. The 2-mile course will circle the UVI field and roadside, while the 4.3-mile event will follow the airport road to the Island Beachcomber bus stop and then return.

Medals and ribbons will be awarded to the two age group winners (female and male) in each event: 17 and under, 18 and over, with special awards to very young or very senior walkers or runners.

Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for youths under 18, and $2 for STAR members. In addition, voluntary donations will be accepted toward a fund to support the travel of competitive St. Thomas-St. John runners at races on St. Croix or elsewhere in the region.

Plaskett West Little League registration for new season

ST. CROIX - The Elmo Plaskett West Little League has opened baseball registration for boys and girls between the ages of 4 to 12 for the 2013 season. A player registration drive will be held at Plaza Extra (West) on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parents and guardians are encouraged to sign up your children.

A registration fee of $25 per child is applicable. The registration fee for any additional child in the household is $20 per child. All fees will go to provide each player a uniform shirt and hat, as well as medical insurance. Players must be of playing age before May 1, 2013, to be eligible. If you have already received your registration form from your child's school, the form may be returned along with the payment and a copy of your child's birth certificate at the registration drive.

Additionally, a general meeting for the league is scheduled for Thursday, at Renholdt Jackson Complex in Estate Whim beginning at 7 p.m. All interested persons willing to volunteer, manage or coach in the Elmo Plaskett West Little League are invited to attend.

USVI women's select team to play in January

The U.S. Virgin Islands Women's National Select Team will host Warren Wilson College (Swannanoa, N.C.) for three games from Jan. 7 through Jan. 12 at Sion Farm Field on St. Croix.

The games will begin next year's tune-up for the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football qualifying for the FIFA U-17 and U-20 Women's World Cups in 2014. CONCACAF hosts qualifying games for international tournaments like the World Cups and Olympic Games. The Warren Wilson College Owls play in NAIA Division III.

The games will be played on Jan. 7, Jan. 9 and Jan. 12 at 6:30 p.m. Members of the Select Team are vying for spots on the two national teams.

The U-17 Women's World Cup will be held in March and April 2014 in Costa Rica. The U-20 Women's World Cup will be held later that year in Canada.

40th Rolex Regatta adds Melges 32 class

ST. THOMAS - The 40th International Rolex Regatta, set for March 22-24, has added the Melges 32 class.

Melges 32 is a one-design class recognized by the International Sailing Federation in 2008, and joins the Beach Cat and IC-24 classes.

"This is good recognition from a strong class," International Rolex Regatta chairman Bill Canfield said, "and the fact that we are the only event that is not stand-alone in this class's Caribbean series speaks volumes about our professional race management team."

Canfield is the manager of the St. Thomas Yacht Club.

The Rolex Regatta is one of four Virgin Islands Sailing Series events the Melges 32 series will race at early next year. The class will participate in the Sportboat Regatta at North Sound, Virgin Gorda, from Feb. 21-14. The Rolex Regatta is the second VISS event and is followed by the BVI Spring Regatta at Nanny Cay, Tortola. The Caribbean Championship, the fourth VISS event, is at Peter Island on April 26-28.

V.I. Open Tennis Tournament

ST. THOMAS - The Choice Wireless V.I. Open Tennis Tournament is set for Feb. 15-18 at The St. Thomas Yacht Club, Sugar Bay Beach Resort & Spa, and Anchorage Condominiums.

The event is the only tournament sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association's Caribbean District.

The tournament includes Open Divisions for men NTRP ranking 4.5 and above in singles and doubles. The B Division, for men and women NTRP ranked 4.0 and below, includes singles, doubles and mixed doubles play, as well as men's Over-60 doubles. Play will be best of three sets for all divisions.

The deadline to register is 5 p.m. on Jan. 25. Registration forms can be downloaded at styc.net. The entry fee of $45 per person for one event or $60 per person for two events includes an event T-shirt, souvenirs and a welcome buffet dinner at St. Thomas Yacht Club.

Yacht club race, fundraiser

ST. THOMAS - The St. Thomas Yacht Club is hosting a race and pig roast in January to benefit the club's youth sailing program.

The $40 entrance fee includes two tickets per boat for the pig roast following the race. Sailors of all ages are welcome, and the race is open to IC-24s, Racers, Cruising boats and any boat 24 feet or longer.

Trophies and gift certificates will be presented to the top three boats. The race will start 8:55 a.m., but skippers will meet at 8 a.m. The event is sponsored by Scotiabank and Budget Marine.

Saturday Kids Soccer

ST. THOMAS - The final Saturday Kids Soccer event of the year will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Charlotte Amalie High School.

Spectators can watch a two-on-two tournament with children ages 5 to 11. The children will be paired with and play against teams of comparable experience.

Rugby practice

ST. THOMAS - The USVI Rugby Football Union practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week from 6-8 p.m. at Charlotte Amalie High School. Veterans, novices and first-time players are all welcome to participate.

The group is training for upcoming scrimmages with the BVI and other down-island teams.

Junior tennis program

ST. CROIX - Tennis pros Don deWilde and Kristopher Elien is running an after-school junior tennis program through Christmas at the Buccaneer Hotel for players between the ages of 5 to 18. For more information, or to ask about times, costs or registration, call 718-3036.

Beach wrestling

ST. THOMAS - The V.I. Wrestling Federation invites the public to beach wrestling at Brewers Bay beach on the first and third Sunday of every month at 3 p.m. For more information, call Shamsie at 690-8632.

Youth tennis program

ST. THOMAS - The USTA Quick Start 10-and-under Youth Tennis Program will be held Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at Doris E. Hodge Tennis Courts in Sub Base.

Soccer clinics

The USVI Soccer Association is conducting free soccer clinics on St. Croix and St. Thomas that are open to boys and girls ages 5-13. The clinics take place from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday at Good Hope School and Educational Complex on St. Croix and at the University of the Virgin Islands soccer field on St. Thomas.

Taekwondo classes

ST. JOHN - There will be taekwondo classes at St. Ursula's Anglican Church Multipurpose Center from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students ages six to adult are welcome.

Free tennis instruction

ST. JOHN - The first 10-and-under Tennis Play Day was held in September at the Cruz Bay tennis courts and because of the event's success, free tennis instruction will now be offered Fridays from 3-6 p.m. and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. For more information, call Pat Harley at 776-6643.
