Women's soccer tryout

ST. THOMAS - Tryout for the U17 Women's national soccer team will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at UVI.

Team chess tournament

ST. THOMAS - The fourth annual Team vs. Team Chess Tournament, sponsored by The V.I. Institute For Teaching And Learning, will take place Saturday at V.I. Montessori School and International Academy.

Registration starts at 7:45 a.m. and the first game begins at 8 a.m.

The event is a four-round tournament. Each round is expected to last for no more than one hour (30 mins per player per game). Player categories are four members per team and include elementary, junior high, and secondary schools. Prizes will be awarded to winners on first-place teams and a trophy will be presented to their school. Lunch will be on sale.

Zero Tolerance Basketball

ST. THOMAS - Rosters for the Zero Tolerance Summer Basketball Leagues are available and must be turned in by May 31. This summer program runs from June 7 to June 30.

The league will be dedicated to the memory of Avery "TD" Frett, and will include the 9-12, 13-15 and 16-18 age divisions.

Because of available use of the gym, leagues may be played in tournament format. Anyone interested in entering a team should call Boyzie at 626-4420, Mark at 626-4515, Shamal at 998-3310, or David at 690-1614.

Beach-to-Beach Power Swim

ST. JOHN - The Friends of V.I. National Park's 10th annual Beach-to-Beach Power Swim will be held on Sunday.

Registration for adults is $50. For youths ages 17 and under, registration is $25. For this year, registration will be limited to 300 swimmers and there will be absolutely no registration on the day of the event.

Tackle football clinic

ST. THOMAS - Any middle, junior or high school boys ages 10-15 (5th grade through 10th) interested in registering for the upcoming V.I. Youth Tackle Football Clinic should contact coach Francisco Jarvis at 244-8591 for more information and applications. Weight restrictions may apply.

40-Plus cricket practices

ST. THOMAS - The 40-Plus cricket club will have practices at the Cancryn School field at 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays as the team prepares for upcoming cricket tournaments. All team members must attend.

Beach wrestling

ST. THOMAS - The V.I. Wrestling Federation has beach wrestling at Brewers Bay Beach at 3 p.m. on the first and third Sunday of every month.

Friday night sailing

ST. THOMAS - The St. Thomas Yacht Club is offering Friday night sailing to the public at 5:30 p.m. every Friday at the St. Thomas Yacht Club. All participants should arrive approximately 30 to 45 minutes before the races begin. Racing will take place in the Cowpet Bay area. Entry fee is $10 per boat per day.

Adult tennis classes

ST. THOMAS - The St. Thomas Racquet Club will have adult tennis classes for beginning and intermediate players from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The classes begin this Tuesday and continue through July 18 at Doris E. Hodge Tennis Courts in Sub Base. Registration is $120 per person.

21st International Optimist Regatta

ST. THOMAS - The 21st International Optimist Regatta, Sea Star Clinic and Sea Star Team Race are scheduled for June 17 to 23. The event, will be hosted by the St. Thomas Yacht Club and the Virgin Islands Sailing Association, while being sanctioned by the Caribbean Sailing Association.

The Sea Star Clinic begins June 17 and runs through June 19. Top international coaches from Optisailors.com, the U.S. national team, the St. Thomas Yacht Club and the Virgin Islands Optimist Dinghy Association - such as Pilo Rocha, Justine O'Connor, Agustin 'Argy' Resano and Santiago Galan - will be doing instruction.

The cost of the clinic is $300 for non-U.S. Virgin Islands' registrants and $275 for U.S. Virgin Islands' residents, and it includes breakfast and lunch for the three days. Clinic registration closes on Wednesday.

The Sea Star Team Racing event is scheduled for June 20. Entry fee for the team racing is $160 per team of four sailors. Registration closes at 5 p.m. on June 19.

The three-day International Optimist Regatta, presented by Glacial Energy, begins June 21. Entry fee is $225 by Wednesday and $250 afterward. Those who register prior to Wednesday will have their names entered into a special drawing to win prizes. Final registration takes place June 20. The entry fee includes an event T-shirt, registration 'goodie' bag, and all meals from the June 20 Welcome Party through the June 23 Sunday Brunch.

Women's and girls' soccer league

ST. THOMAS - The U.S. Virgin Islands Soccer Association's St. Thomas Women's Soccer League takes place at the UVI soccer field every Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. Any women interested in to learning to play soccer are invited. Rugby practice

ST. THOMAS - The USVI Rugby Football Union practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week from 6 to 8 p.m. at Charlotte Amalie High School. Veterans, novices and first-time players are all welcome to participate.

The group is training for upcoming scrimmages with down-island teams.

Soccer clinics

The USVI Soccer Association is conducting free soccer clinics on St. Croix and St. Thomas that are open to boys and girls ages 5-13. The clinics take place from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday at Good Hope School and Educational Complex on St. Croix and at the University of the Virgin Islands soccer field on St. Thomas. Taekwondo classes

ST. JOHN - There will be taekwondo classes at St. Ursula's Anglican Church Multipurpose Center from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students ages 6 to adult are welcome.

Free tennis instruction

ST. JOHN - The first 10-and-under Tennis Play Day was held last September at the Cruz Bay tennis courts and because of the event's success, free tennis instruction will now be offered Fridays from 3 to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, call Pat Harley at 776-6643.

Ladies golf clinics

ST. THOMAS - Mahogany Run Golf Course is offering ladies golf lessons every Saturday starting this week from 9 to 10 a.m. Bring a friend and learn to play golf. For more information or to sign up, call Veronica at the Golf Shop at 777-6006 ext. 1.
