ST. THOMAS - The Virgin Islands Institute for Teaching and Learning hosted a Youth Scholastic Chess Tournament on Saturday at Antilles School as private and public school students on St. Thomas and St. John competed in three different age divisions.

The students used the tournament as a tune-up for the Southern Amateur Youth Scholastic Chess Tournament, which will be held Feb. 16-21 in Florida, chess coach and coordinator Sinclair Wilkinson said.

William Van Rensslaer of Antilles School had home-field advantage and won the 13-and-over division, while Ivanna Eudora Kean High's Nkosi Jones was second. Charlotte Amalie High's Shamiel Vanterpool and Briana Rhymer finished in a tie for third.

In the 12-and-under division, Ulla Muller Elementary School's Teon Persaud took home top honors while Lloyd Joseph of Gifft Hill School was runner-up. Ulla Muller's Benjamin Berry took third and special mention went to Tristan Montalvo of Ulla Muller.

Antilles School's Viren Punjabi and Allesandro Gever took first and second in the 9-and-under division, while a third-place tie went to V.I. Montessori School and International Academy's Kamden Benjamin and Taber Helton.

"A special thanks goes out to all of the coaches and parents who assisted; the Antilles School and all of the students who participated in this event," Wilkinson said.

The group also held an appreciation meeting Jan. 14 at Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School to thank parents, teachers, chaperones and others who have supported chess in the local community. For more information, call Wilkinson at 514-7054 or e-mail wilks2268@hotmail.com.
