Local youths compete in V.I. Elementary Track Championships

More than 100 elementary school children, representing 14 public and private schools and track clubs, competed in the Virgin Islands Elementary School Track and Field Championships at the St. Croix Educational Complex track on Saturday morning.
The event was organized by the St. Croix Track Club and the V.I. Pace Runners, and sanctioned by the V.I. Track and Field Federation.
V.I. Olympic Committee President Angel Morales and visiting coaches Patrick Costagno and Anthuan Maybank, an Olympic gold medalist from Tatnall School in Wilmington, Del., observed the competitors, presented medals to the winners and chatted with coaches and parents. Maybank wore his Olympic gold medal and autographed photographs for all the participants.
The day started with exhibition events in the 800 meters and 100 meters for open runners. The girls 800 meters saw Rachael Conoff of the St. Croix Track Club and Country Day School win in 2 minutes and 33 seconds, edging out Educational Complex and St. Croix Track Club teammates Ashley Paddie (2:33.4) and Deana Roumo (2:34.5).
Britney Sage, of Complex and the St. Croix Track Club, won the Girls 100 meters in 12.25 seconds over teammate Mya Jack (13.33) and Amanda Basierre of the Hounds and Foxes Track Club (14.64).
In the Boys Open 100 meters, Malique Smith, of Complex and the St. Croix Track Club, took first place with in 11.17 seconds. Teammate Kareem Jno-Finn was second in 11.36 and Nyhne Daniel of Hounds and Foxes was third in 11.44.
Younger competitors were divided into age groups of under 9, under 11 and 13 and under, and competed in distances from 80 meters to 800 meters.
No schools from the St. Thomas-St. John district traveled to St. Croix to compete in this year's event.
