Adriel Sanes wanted to go out with a bang.

The 13-year-old Good Hope School student will be leaving St. Croix in a few weeks, but before he and his family move to Texas, the best young triathlete in the territory wanted to leave with one more win.

Sanes took top honors at the second and final triathlon of the 2011-2012 Kids Tri-V.I. Series at Cramer Park on Sunday.

More than 30 children from ages 5 through 15 competed in four age divisions, and Sanes won the swim-bike-run event in 26 minutes and 4 seconds.

Organized by the USVI Triathlon Federation, this year's Kids Tri-V.I. Series consisted of two triathlons, two duathlons and two Splash n' Dash races on St. Croix, but one event was canceled because of inclement weather.

"What a glorious day for a grand finale event," said USVI Triathlon Federation general secretary Theresa Harper, who was also an event organizer. "With the threat of another rainy morning, the race organizers were pleased to have pulled off a super fun, end-of-the-season race."

Sanes, who repeated as the Kids Tri-V.I. Series champion, won the 12-15 age division, which included a 200-meter swim, a 3-mile bike and 1-mile run. Sophie Dean took second in the age division, while Shashwat Acharya was third.

Race organizers gave Sanes a special award for his hard work and steady commitment to a sport that is reaching new heights in the territory.

"Not only has he attended all of the junior races this season and several adult races, Adriel has been very humble about his accomplishments," Harper said. "He not only inspires smaller kids with his great work ethics in school and his athletic talents on the field, but adults look at Adriel as a polite, well-rounded, super kid."

In the 9-11 age division, Wilson Reynolds was third coming out of the water but surged to the lead during the bike portion. He held on to win the 100-meter swim, 1-mile bike and half-mile run race in 13:56.

Antonio Galiber was second in the division, followed by Dominic Pugliese. Melinda Elser was the first girl in the 9-11 age division.

Mikey Dizon-Bumann won the 7-8 age division, which had the largest field. Aislin McStay was first out of the water, but Dizon-Bumann recorded the fastest bike time in the division and won the 50-meter swim, half-mile bike and quarter-mile run race in 7:06.

Rockwell Elser was the second finisher and Stefan Moorman was the third boys finisher. Charlotte Halk posted very consistent times and was the first-place girl along with finishing third overall in the group.

In the 5-6 age division, Odin Andrews was the first out of the water in the 25-meter swim, half-mile bike, quarter-mile run race, and carried his lead all of the way to the finish tape in 8:54. He was followed by two first-timers in Joey Croney and Kaeden Gleason. Angelisa Adams was the first girl in the group, followed by Kathryn Garren.

Adriel Sanes, Gabriel Sanes, Odin Andrews, Mikey Dizon-Bumann, Cooper Crowther and Erin Andrews competed in all five races in the series this year and were awarded a gift from the USVI Triathlon Federation for their dedication.

The USVI Triathlon Federation also bought a new bike from Stamina Sports and it was raffled off during the event. Newcomer Kaeden Gleason was the lucky winner of the Trek Jet 20.
