U.S. Virgin Islands sailor Mimi Roller is starting to make a run in the Women's Laser Radial Division, taking a third-place finish in the second of two races Wednesday at the Pan American Games sailing competition in Puerta Vallarta.

Roller, a 20-year-old St. John native, started the day with a 10th-place finish and now sits in eighth place among 13 sailors with six races to go. Today will be a rest day and the finals are scheduled for Sunday.

The USVI's Cy Thompson, a 23-year-old St. Thomas native, finished ninth and 12th on Wednesday and is in last place in the Men's Laser Division. Argentina's Julio Alsogaray has won two races and leads the fleet.

Argentina's Cecilia Carranza Saroli won her third race of the regatta on Wednesday and leads the Women's Laser Radial Division. The top four in the fleet have pulled away, but the fifth- through 10th-place sailors are all within seven points of each other.

Event organizers for the 6-day regatta are hoping to race each fleet twice a day at the Puerta Vallarta Yacht Club.

This is the first appearance for Thompson at the Pan American Games. He took the gold medal in the Laser Division at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games. Roller has competed at the last two CAC Games and this is her second straight trip to the Pan Am Games.
