ST. THOMAS - The St. Thomas horse racing schedule for 2013 got under way on Sunday with five exciting contests.
On a day that saw no competitors from the British Virgin Islands or St. Croix, Sweet Sight represented the St. Thomas stables well with a win in the feature race at Clinton Phipps Racetrack. With Brian Gonzalez aboard, he rode the 1-mile distance in 1 minute and 43.1 seconds to earn the winner's share of the $5,000 purse. News Carrier finished second to place, and Twisted Dream was third in show. Khun Dan also competed in the race.
Seeing Gonzalez win was a regular theme for the day as he jockeyed his horses across the finish line first in three of the five races on the day. He began the day with a win in the $3,400 Race No. 1, riding Charlie the Runner over six furlongs in 1:13. River Crescent was second and Walk the Tiger did not finish.
Gonzalez also rode Mr. Gold Prospect to a win in 1:39 over one mile in Race No. 4, which was worth $4,000. Tiger Glider was second in place and Voice of Faith was a scratch.
Race No. 2 saw Wilfredo Gotay ride What's Poppin to a win in 1:10.3 over six furlongs for the winner's share of the $3,500 purse. Were's Gap placed and Ex-Pleasure was in show. Green Light Special, with Carlos Pizzaro aboard, won the $3,500 Race No. 3 in 1:42.4 over one mile. Daddy's Dream was second and Cash-N-Carry was third.
The next race on the V.I. racing calendar is the St. Croix Ag Fair Races on Feb. 17 at Randall "Doc" James Racetrack, and the next races on St. Thomas will take place on March 17. The races are the final two legs of the V.I. Triple Crown Classic.
