ST. THOMAS - The University of the Virgin Islands men's soccer team defeated the University of Puerto Rico Bayamon, 4-1, on Saturday at the Bayamon Soccer Complex.
The win moves UVI to 2-1-2 on the season, and Head Coach Yohannes Worde said that they will be in either second or third place in league play depending on the results of other games over the weekend.
"I was very impressed," Worde said. "It really a team effort. We have an excellent group of guys."
Worde said that UVI came out with a low-pressure offense in the first 20 minutes. They then moved Denny Smith to striker and he did his job at the 24-minute mark to put UVI up, 1-0.
Bayamon equalized the game about 10 minutes later and the half ended, 1-1.
UVI tallied three more goals, one each from Mohammed Yusuf, Suresh Sookraj and Javed Rawlins, to earn a solid victory.
"Getting goals from so many different players, teams have a hard time figuring out who our danger man is," Worde said.
Worde gave special recognition to defender Dimitri Maduro and goalie Troy Misseau.
He added that the team has learned to play together even though half of the squad is from St. Croix and half is from St. Thomas. They are unable to practice together regularly but have developed good technical skills.
