University of the Virgin Islands senior guard Wilson Ferrance scored a game-high 21 points in a 72-64 win over University of Puerto Rico-Arecibo on Friday.

It was the Buccaneers third game in as many days to start the season against conference foes in Liga Atletica Interuniversitaria. The team finished 2-1 for the first time in the Chicarron Tournament at UPR-Bayamon. Of the 21 LAI teams, 16 competed in the 37th annual tournament.

Ferrence and teammate Amali Krigger each chipped in with a game-high nine rebounds. Ferrance was 4-for-5 from long range, and senior Max Cymerint added 17 points as one of four Bucs in double figures. Melvin Adamson had the team's lone double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

UVI first-year coach Ryan Skinner was impressed by his team's performance.

"Again, the seniors stepped up," Skinner said in a press release. "This was the third game in three days. Players were fatigued, but grinded it out."

The tournament started Wednesday, and UVI dropped a 76-41 game to UPR-Bayamon. Rust was apparent as the Bucs had not played since Dec. 17. UVI had 22 turnovers and shot just 16-for-46.

"Guys were rusty and didn't know what to expect," Skinner said. "Everyone played poorly and were sloppy."

The team rebounded with a 67-57 win over UPR-Humacao on Thursday. Ferrance was one of three Bucs in double figures and finished with a team-high 12 points. Jerrick Amaro had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

"Our seniors played a huge role in getting the guys back together," Skinner said. "It was a close game the entire way. Our defense was able to get some key stops. Our guys played well together. Scoring was very evenly distributed."

The Bucs play at American University of Puerto Rico on Feb. 2. An official date for the team's first home game has not been set.
